- Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.
- On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.
- First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.
Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.
- Ultimately we were left unconvinced that Cunningham (the dancer) was all that interesting. Fashionable certainly, he's attached to the right people, and I'm sure it would be great to be dancing as him, but the just-over-half-full prime-time-at-the-festival cinema was an endless circuit of yawns.

On the other hand, when it comes to exploring the man behind the art, the film’s execution feels out of step with its ambition. Cunningham blended the footwork of classical ballet with less traditional movements of the torso to craft a style often labeled as avant-garde, though he shied away from the label. Cunningham launched his career in the late 1930s and was active until his death, at 90, in 2009. The documentary tracks the rise of Cunningham’s New York-based dance company, focusing on dance pieces he created between 1942 and 1972. Peppered throughout the documentary, these sequences feature a fusion of virtuosic choreography, remarkable athleticism and polished filmmaking. (The film’s preferred format is 3-D, though the visuals are still impressive in the 2-D print that will be shown at Landmark’s E Street Cinema. ) By setting the expressive dances in surprising locales — including a lush forest of towering trees, a cobblestone town square and a fluorescent-lit tunnel — Kovgan accentuates the seemingly limitless possibilities of Cunningham’s aesthetic, with visual grandeur. Some dances are presented without music: Accompanied only by the rhythmic patter of footsteps, the camera gracefully glides through long, uninterrupted shots. Kovgan, a Russian filmmaker making her solo feature debut, also creates a sense of scale, using striking aerial footage of dancers performing on a seaside rooftop. In the film’s most memorable number, Kovgan re-creates “RainForest” — a 1968 collaboration with Andy Warhol in which dancers in tattered costumes weave between sleek, silver balloons. Dancers perform a piece by choreographer Merce Cunningham on a seaside rooftop in the documentary “Cunningham. ” (Magnolia Pictures) So what do we learn about the mastermind behind such innovation? Using rehearsal and interview footage, the film presents Cunningham as a difficult genius, less interested in commercial success than pure artistic expression. To compensate for the smaller aspect ratio of the archival footage, Kovgan cleverly fills in the frame with photographs and letters from Cunningham’s life, at times throwing multiple clips on screen simultaneously, and playing them side by side. These elements lend the film the appealing aesthetic of a scrapbook. But the tracking of Cunningham’s career is disappointingly scattershot, barely scratching the surface of the man outside the dance studio. The decision to limit the scope of the documentary to Cunningham’s heyday means we learn little about the roots of his artistry, or the endurance of his legacy. Yo FOX made a huuuge damn mistake for cancel game shows like this. My mom don't like this show idk why but to me I love it. This go 🔥. First lol. I’d recommend learning the basics and thinking about what spells you really like and want to use before committing to any breakthroughs. You only have so many action slots(unless you’re cheesing it with a mod on pc)and rune magic tends to focus on very different damage types than sigil & spellblade damage. A lot of people who go for a generalist “gotta learn em all” mage wind up not really being able to do good damage with anything in particular, so they start kiting and take sigils off their hotbar, then they wind up mainly using runic mine because it synergizes well with a kiting style, and then they wind up blaming the game for making magic “boring”, because they envisioned some ultimate archmagus but wound up spread too thin to be especially good at anything. Pyro mages are really awesome and have a lot of quirky underrated potential, immolation keeps fireballs relevant and many common tools are deadly in their hands- flint and steel creates a circle of flame around you and you can protect yourself with mana ward, throwing hand crafted lanterns(2x iron scrap 1 cloth 1 oil) are basically mana free D&D style explosive aoe fireballs, and the early game flamethrower spell can scale very impressively when stacked with immolation, fire mastery and elemental vulnerability. Rune magic is awesome and versatile, mainly dealing ethereal and lightning damage with a bit of decay potential. If you feel mine kiting is the only thing it’s good for check out the rune armor sold in Berg, the same town that teaches rune magic. Shaman is a really good supplement for any sort of mage and guns trigger off the wind sigil so gun mages are a very strong option if you want something different. Hope this helps!

Realizing that it was an impossible task, the first prince returned with an expensive stone bowl, hoping that Kaguya-hime would believe it to be real, but after noticing that the bowl did not glow with holy light, Kaguya-hime saw through his deception. Likewise, two other princes attempted to deceive her with fakes, but also failed. The fourth gave up after encountering a storm, while the final prince lost his life (severely injured in some versions) in his attempt. After this, the Emperor of Japan, Mikado, came to see the strangely beautiful Kaguya-hime and, upon falling in love, asked her to marry him. Although he was not subjected to the impossible trials that had thwarted the princes, Kaguya-hime rejected his request for marriage as well, telling him that she was not of his country and thus could not go to the palace with him. She stayed in contact with the Emperor, but continued to rebuff his requests and marriage proposals. That summer, whenever Kaguya-hime saw the full moon, her eyes filled with tears. Though her adoptive parents worried greatly and questioned her, she was unable to tell them what was wrong. Her behaviour became increasingly erratic until she revealed that she was not of this world and must return to her people on the Moon. In some versions of this tale, it is said that she was sent to the Earth, where she would inevitably form material attachment, as a temporary punishment for some crime, while in others, she was sent to Earth for her own safety during a celestial war. The gold that Taketori no Okina had been finding had in fact been a stipend from the people of the Moon, sent down to pay for Kaguya-hime's upkeep. Kaguya-hime goes back to the Moon As the day of her return approached, the Emperor sent many guards around her house to protect her from the Moon people, but when an embassy of "Heavenly Beings" arrived at the door of Taketori no Okina's house, the guards were blinded by a strange light. Kaguya-hime announced that, though she loved her many friends on Earth, she must return with the Moon people to her true home. She wrote sad notes of apology to her parents and to the Emperor, then gave her parents her own robe as a memento. She then took a little of the elixir of life, attached it to her letter to the Emperor, and gave it to a guard officer. As she handed it to him, her feather robe was placed on her shoulders, and all of her sadness and compassion for the people of the Earth were apparently forgotten. The heavenly entourage took Kaguya-hime back to Tsuki no Miyako (月の都; lit. "the Capital of the Moon"), leaving her earthly foster parents in tears. The parents became very sad and were soon put to bed sick. The officer returned to the Emperor with the items Kaguya-hime had given him as her last mortal act, and reported what had happened. The Emperor read her letter and was overcome with sadness. He asked his servants, "Which mountain is the closest place to Heaven? ", to which one replied the Great Mountain of Suruga Province. The Emperor ordered his men to take the letter to the summit of the mountain and burn it, in the hope that his message would reach the distant princess. The men were also commanded to burn the elixir of immortality since the Emperor did not wish to live forever without being able to see her. The legend has it that the word immortality, 不死 ( fushi), became the name of the mountain, Mount Fuji. It is also said that the kanji for the mountain, 富士山 (literally "Mountain Abounding with Warriors"), are derived from the Emperor's army ascending the slopes of the mountain to carry out his order. It is said that the smoke from the burning still rises to this day. (In the past, Mount Fuji was much more volcanically active and therefore produced more smoke. ) Literary connections [ edit] Elements of the tale were drawn from earlier stories. The protagonist Taketori no Okina, given by name, appears in the earlier poetry collection Man'yōshū (c. 759; poem# 3791). In it, he meets a group of women to whom he recites a poem. This indicates that there previously existed an image or tale revolving around a bamboo cutter and celestial or mystical women. [6] [7] A similar retelling of the tale appears in the c. 12th century Konjaku Monogatarishū (volume 31, chapter 33), although their relation is under debate. [8] Banzhu Guniang [ edit] In 1957, Jinyu Fenghuang (金玉鳳凰), a Chinese book of Tibetan tales, was published. [9] In early 1970s, Japanese literary researchers became aware that "Banzhu Guniang" (班竹姑娘), one of the tales in the book, had certain similarities with The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. [10] [11] Initially, many researchers thought that "Banzhu Guniang" must be related to Tale of Bamboo Cutter, although some were skeptical. In 1980s, studies showed that the relationship is not as simple as initially thought. Okutsu provides extensive review of the research, and notes that the book Jinyu Fenghuang was intended to be for children, and as such, the editor took some liberties in adapting the tales. No other compilation of Tibetan tales contains the story. [12] A Tibet-born person wrote that he did not know the story. [13] A researcher went to Sichuan and found that, apart from those who had already read "Jinyu Fenghuang", local researchers in Chengdu did not know the story. Some of its science fiction plot elements include Kaguya-hime being a princess from the Moon who is sent to Earth for safety during a celestial war, an extraterrestrial being raised by a human on Earth, and her being taken back to the Moon by her real extraterrestrial family. YouTube. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is based on the Japanese folk tale The Daughter of the Bamboo Cutter, a tale that has been transmitted since the 16th century. This is one of those films that you don't imagine being made by anybody who is not Ghibli related. The tale could have been turned into a simplistic story for dumb kids with showy 3G visuals and little substance. However, Ghibli and Takhata created an animated piece that is both beautiful to look at, but also a complex multi-layered story with archetypal mythical characters, both delightful to watch and true to the myth.

I saw "Just Mercy" a few days ago at the Philadelphia Film Festival and was blown away by the film. and I consider it to be one of the best movies I've seen in recent years. I could easily see the picture receiving several Oscar nominations- especially for acting. Imagine my suprise when I looked on IMDB and saw a score of 5.6 and some negative reviews! I am not exactly sure what this is all about and perhaps it's because there are some angry pro-capital punishment folks or some who simply hate a film with a mostly black cast. All I know is that the film is a quality production and kept my interest throughout.
